Blake Ainsworth

An amazing day of big wave surfing at the inaugural Fantastic Noodles Intense Wave Challenge 09 held in perfect surf up around the serious 15 feet range (4m plus!) in South Australia.

What a day for Gold Coast surfer Blake Ainsworth who won his biggest ever event and pocketed $11 000 for the win, tube riding his way to a well deserved win over local South Australian charger Josiah Schmucker.

“The best day of my surfing career by far” commented an exhausted and elated Ainsworth after his final.

“The waves were incredibly big at times but also perfect and barrelling and to win today means a lot to me, especially with everyone charging so hard and scoring big through just about every heat – it’s been awesome.”

There were numerous stand-out performances throughout the day which was designed to expose the next breed of Australian’s heading for the world tour to the serious side of facing your fears and charging really serious waves – and there’s no doubt today’s experience went a long way to hardening these young chargers.

High performance surfing in the 2009 Azores Islands Pro

Wiggoly Dantas

The second day of action of the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star event saw twenty heats run in smaller but still consistent four to five foot (1.2 to 1.5 meter) waves, Round 1 being completed before event top seeds could paddle out to get their campaign started. While Gold Coast resident Brent Dorrington (AUS) was dominating the last battles of first round, event favorites could get ready for their opening encounters.

After a morning of tricky heats where competitors had difficulties to get over the 13.00 point result mark except for Dorrington’s solid 16.00-point performance, Round 2 brought another standard of surfing with top seeds stepping-up to score big. Brazil’s Wiggoly Dantas (BRA), 19, was unquestionably the day’s standout posting a near perfect 9.83 point ride en route to winning Heat 6 with the best result of the event thus far, 18.33 points (out of a possible 20) to start off his event run.

“It was a good heat for me and to start an event with a high-scoring result is definitely good,” Dantas said. “That wave walled up pretty well and I went for classic and powerful turns and it paid off so I am really happy with my run. I broke my board this morning and had to get a new one for that heat. Apparently it is working pretty well!”

2009 Azores Islands Pro in Portugal

Professional surfing history was made today when the first ever ASP sanctioned event got underway on the North Shore of Sao Miguel Island, the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star Azores Islands Pro being treated to solid five to six foot (1.5 to 2 meter) waves. Twelve heats were held in the testing surf on offer, the expected north swell hitting the island with power and speed to allow the first twelve heats of Round 1 to run and deliver a promising show before event top seeds get their start tomorrow.

Raoni Monteiro (Saquarema, BRA), 27, a former ASP World Tour surfer, put the show upside down in the final minute of Heat 11, the second-to-last of the day, after posting a near perfect 9.77 point ride on a solid six-foot wave to jump back in the lead and end up winning his encounter ahead of Granger Larsen (HAW). Monteiro, who was stuck in second position for almost the whole heat, was able to get a long righthander and show the ASP judges he had the skills to impress his peers with fantastic surfing.

“I feel I was a bit lucky actually because the peak was shifty and that wave came to me,” Monteiro said. “I got that six-pointer early in the heat and I knew I needed a second ride to finish confidently but I was lost out there. I just sat out there hoping for a good one and it came so I am really happy.”

Over 160 surfers compete in the Australian Surfmasters Titles

Mitch Baker

As the mercury rose on day two of the Australian Surfmasters Titles so did the high scores and amazing performances as competitors blazed a trail at Lighthouse Beach.

Seeing unseasonably hot weather throughout the mid-north coast, temperatures rose beyond 30 degrees, Lighthouse Beach was the perfect backdrop for the best surfers in Australia.

With over 160 of the best amateur competitors from across the land the Open Men and Women opened up procedures with a dizzying array of surfing.

Brittani Nichol (Cabarita, NSW) was by far the standout of the morning, revelling in the one-metre conditions.

Having been in the USA for the past three weeks on the international competitive surfing merry-go-round, Nichol sent out a warning shot to her counterparts.

“I’ve just arrived home after spending three weeks in California,” she said after racking up the highest total heat score of 16.50 (out of a possible 20).

“I surfed Trestles heaps and had so much fun, but it’s time to refocus and do well here.”

Negotiating the conditions better than any other competitor on day two, Nichol found solace in the southern bank – picking off the right-handers with ease.

“I managed to pick the right waves in my heat, but it’s quite tough with the small swell,” Nichol said.

“There are so many great competitors from around the country so to do well here would be awesome.”

Marc Lacomare conquers the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Junior at Seignosse

Marc Lacomare (Hossegor, FRA), 18, has won the ASP Grade-3 Rip Curl Pro Junior at Seignosse in France today after defeating Hawaii’s wunderkind John John Florence (Oahu, HAW), 15, in testing five foot (1.5 meter) waves. Lacomare, who claimed his second event win this afternoon to jump back in the lead on the ASP European Junior ratings, dominated the crucial event by far with several of the competition’s best scores posted en route to victory.

Second to last event counting for the crowning of the regional Under-21 champion, the Rip Curl Pro Junior witnessed world class action with the European contingent suffering Florence’s impressive run who was to be defeated in his last attempt to clain the title by Lacomare.

“That result is just great, especially because it’s at home and I have my friends and family supporting me at the beach,” Lacomare said. “I stuck to my game plan during the final which was to be patient and get the better waves to score well enough and win the thing. John John (Florence is a great surfer and I knew he could get any required score to catch-up with me so I stayed focused until the end.”

At 18-years-old, Lacomare has gone to number one on the ratings and will head to the final event in the Canary Islands confidently having the opportunity to grab his maiden regional crown if he counters his followers’ assaults.

“There is only one event left before the end of the season and I am leading so it is a good position to have,” Lacomare said. “I have a bit of a margen with the rest of the front runners and I will be looking to consolidate my position and win the title this year.”

Joan Duru conquers the 2009 Sooruz Lacanau Pro in France

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Joan Duru

Joan Duru (Ondres, FRA), 20, won the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro today in France after defeating fellow finalist Travis Logie (Durban, ZAF), 30, in consistent clean four foot (1.2 meter) waves in front of a massive cheering crowd. Duru, who had impressed his peers throughout what will be remembered as one of the best editions ever, was unstoppable en route to claiming the prestigious thirtieth edition of the event nicknamed the French Pro. Grabbing 2500 ratings’ points and US$20.000 for his performance this week, Duru’s result rockets the Ondres native from No. 10 to No. 7 on the ASP World Qualifying (WQS) ratings. Duru became the second French surfer since Thierry Fernandez in 1982 to win the event at Lacanau today, the first French surfer to win an ASP WQS major event in France at the same time.

Duru, who paddled out under pressure knowing a win would significantly ease his ASP Top 45 inception campaign, showed he had the skills to tame the excellent conditions on offer and kept his opponent away from the winner’s place posting a 16.47 point heat score (out of a possible 20) to seal the deal in front of a cheering crowd. At 20 years of age, Duru made history today besting former ASP World Tour elite surfer Travis Logie who had posted the event’s highest heat score earlier in the day.

“I am just so happy right now, I wanted to win so bad I am really over the moon and can’t really realize the result yet,” Duru said. “I felt quite uner pressure throughout the event and until the Semifinal I was just very focused and anxious but I managed to get over it for the final and I really let go to surf at my best. Travis (Logie) never let go off me and he is an impressive competitor so I really played my game and used priority and it finishes perfectly.”

Ellis Ericson conquers the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters in Bondi Beach

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Ellis Ericson

In a tiny swell at the world famous Bondi Beach, Ellis Ericson (Suffolk Park) has taken out the final qualifying event of the Red Bull Junior Surf Masters.

Starting out as an alternate, Ericson was not guaranteed to surf today however a no show provided him the opportunity into the first round.

Dominating the field by placing first in every heat, apart from his semi-final where he placed 2nd, Ericson has secured his place in the final to be held at Cronulla in Sydney’s south along with a host of other prizes.

Posting a 6.17 and a 6.77 (out of a possible 10), Ericson’s total of 12.94 (out of a possible 20) was too good for other surfers Max Ashford (Matraville), Chris Salisbury (Newport) and Tamaroa McComb (Burleigh Heads) who places second, third and fourth respectively.

The final was not without its drama with McComb only needing a small score to over-take Ericson for the lead, an interference was called on McComb for dropping in on Ayshford. This sent McComb to last place and allowing Ericson to hold onto the lead and take top spot.

McComb was strong all day, proving his worth by boosting massive air reverses in every heat showing his commitment to innovation and radical surfing.

All four surfers in today's final go through to the Trials in Cronulla next week.

Other standout surfers from the day were Jake Fawcett (Geraldton) and Kurt Kiggings (Lilli Pilli) who made it to the semi-finals.

2009 Australian Longboard Titles

A great week of surfing, weather, waves and comradery was capped off with an amazing last day of competition at the Australian Longboard Titles.

Having seen 184 of Australia’s best converging on Port Macquarie, today represented the pinnacle with 11 National Titles awarded in front of a large crowd.

In the Open Men division Josh Constable (Noosa, QLD) highlighted to all why he is one of the greatest ever Australian surfers.

Defeating Harley Ingelby (Emerald Beach, NSW), Grant Thomas (Maroochydore, QLD) and Dane Pioli (Tweed Heads, NSW) , who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Constable extended his reign as the most successful amateur longboarder in Australian history.

“To win five Australian Titles is amazing,” he said.

“When I started surfing as a youngster I always dreamed of winning one National Title and a World Title,” he admitted.

“To achieve this and more is beyond words.”

Wrapped in an enthralling battle from start to finish, Constable was glad to get the nod ahead of great mates and excellent competitors.

With a see-sawing battle over the 25-minute finale, Constable and Ingelby traded blows until the very end.

“The level of surfing on show throughout the entire week has been first-class,” Constable admitted.

“It’s always good to be beat the best,” he said.

2009 Sooruz Lacanau Pro in France

The Sooruz Lacanau Pro, celebrating its 30th edition this week, got back to serious business today in consistent four to six foot (1.2 to 2 meter) waves for an action-packed day of surfing, top seeds and outsiders delivering world-class surfing to please the crowds. The expected new swell had hit the coast during the night and proceedings resumed at 7.30 AM for the completion of Round 2 before the last fourty-eight contenders could get on with their French campaign.

Making the trip from his Hossegor residence to support his friends Patrick Beven (Biarritz, FRA) and Michael Picon (Capbreton, FRA), Jeremy Flores (FRA) made a surprise visit to the ASP WQS 6-Star event where he placed runner-up in 2007 en route to qualifying for the ASP World Tour. Having chosen the most spectacular day of the week to show-up, Flores witnessed the intense battle taking place at Lacanau, with Alain Riou (Tahiti, PYF) taking an unquestionable lead over the remaining competitors in Heat 8 of Round 3, scoring the only perfect 10.00 point ride of the event so far.

Riou, who advanced through to Round 4, put up a show to tame the fast closing conditions on offer, the Reunion Island native showing great commitment and style to post an impressive the perfect score after linking three consecutive vertical maneuvers on a six-foot solid wave. Riou, who has had a promising year with a couple of solid results including a fifth in the ASP WQS 6-Star prime event in South Africa, showed he was back in good form today.
